Is Colloidal Silver a Drug or is it a Nutritional Supplement?

Under current FDA rules, colloidal silver is a nutritional supplement

If you make any claim as to its ability to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or condition, colloidal silver is now a drug. If you drink carrot juice to quench your thirst it is carrot juice.  If you drink carrot juice to help improve your eyesight, carrot juice is now a drug!

Congress defined the term “dietary supplement” as a product that, among other things, is intended for ingestion, is intended to supplement the diet, is labeled as a dietary supplement, is not represented as a conventional food or as a sole item of a meal or diet, and contains a “dietary ingredient.” “Dietary ingredients” are defined as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs or other botanicals, dietary substances (such as enzymes), and concentrates, metabolites, constituents, extracts, or combinations of the preceding types of ingredients. Dietary supplements may be found in many forms, such as tablets, capsules, liquids, or bars.

So, in effect, citizens of the USA are not allowed to say anything more than colloidal silver is a nutritional supplement, even if they have scientific proof (e.g. lab reports from FDA-registered labs) that colloidal silver can kill specific pathogens.

In 1996, the FDA solicited input from the colloidal silver industry and citizens as to the efficacy and to provide scientific proof of its ability to kill pathogens.  Since the colloidal silver industry was very young and under-financed, the industry as a whole did not know about the request from the FDA for information, nor did they have the financial resources to conduct such testing and supply the FDA with sufficient information as to the safety and efficacy of colloidal silver.  Lacking sufficient data, the FDA ruled that:

The FDA has issued a Final Rule declaring that all over- the-counter (OTC) drug products containing colloidal silver or silver salts are not recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. The ruling categorized colloidal silver as an unclassified drug. Any colloidal silver products marketed as having medicinal properties are now in violation of federal law.

Since the FDA ruling, it is fair to ask:

  1. What evidence is there that colloidal silver is toxic?

  2. What evidence is there that colloidal silver in not effective against pathogens?

  3. Which evidence was relied upon to form the regulations?

These questions go unanswered

After exhaustive work based on anecdotal evidence, the study of EPA guidelines, FDA inquiries, and various privately sponsored research studies, it is quite clear that isolated colloidal silver is NOT a toxic substance in the body. This can be demonstrated theoretically by legally established guidelines, by a growing body of anecdotal evidence, and by various studies concentrating on colloidal silver elimination through natural body processes.

However, due to the fact that silver is both a natural substance AND not a controlled substance, it is still protected under the ‘The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act’. Under this law, any labeling and/or advertising referring to any health benefits of the substance in question is unlawful. The substance must be labeled as a dietary supplement and may NOT be marketed for external use.

The FDA Admits it has no Clinical Data Suggesting

Isolated Silver is Unsafe for Human Use

Speculation is free, yet the FDA, with the stroke of the pen, has outlawed a remedy going back to biblical times that has saved countless lives throughout time. There are literally thousands of university and government studies that conclude that colloidal silver is a strong antimicrobial and if fact, colloidal silver was the standard of care prior to antibiotics.

Why else would NASA use colloidal silver to purify the astronauts’ drinking water?

The World Health Organization promotes the use of colloidal silver in drinking water and said “(There) is no health-based guideline value proposed for silver in drinking-water.”

And the US EPA said “Although the deposition of silver is permanent (argyria), it is not associated with any adverse health effects. No pathologic changes or inflammatory reactions have been shown to result from silver deposition.”

Apparently, there is absolutely no evidence that colloidal silver can in any way be harmful to humans or animals.  The only adverse effect from colloidal silver is a very rare and non-threatening effect called argyria. There have not been any cases of anyone getting this disorder taking true colloidal silver. The FDA said, in essence, that they simply did not have enough information, so they banned colloidal silver.

So, colloidal silver is relegated to the ranks of ‘nutritional supplement’ and unless a company is willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars and wait 10 years for approval “as a new drug”, colloidal silver will never become a real tool for medical science to eliminate suffering in mankind.

Colloidal silver is not FDA approved, but Vioxx Is

60,000 Americans DIED from Vioxx.  There has never been one case of someone dying from colloidal silver.  You can still buy Vioxx. It is amazing what a ruling can do, even in the face of admission from the FDA that it did not have enough information to rule otherwise.  The logic is; if we can’t prove it safe, it must not be safe. This is tantamount to saying that since we do not know if life exists on other planets, it must not.
